Visit the Deutschlandfunk...a behind-the-scenes tour of one of Germany’s major public broadcasters and its iconic Brutalist building.

Funkhaus des Deutschlandfunks in Köln

Deutschlandfunk is one of the most important German information and news radio stations. We will visit the Funkhaus in Cologne, which is a listed building due to its urban and architectural significance. During the guided tour, you will get to know the Chamber Music Hall, the studios and control rooms built in this area, but also its Brutalist architecturethe: the special construction and arrangement of the high-rise, plinth, cuboid building and technical tower.
The Funkhaus Köln is the main transmitter site of Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandfunk NovaGet a behind-the-scenes look at:

  • the work of one of Germany’s major public broadcasters
  • everyday life in radio and broadcasting
  • media and journalism in Germany

...and the "Kölner Dom"/ the Cologne Cathedral 

Hauptschiff Kölner Dom

Afterwards we explore Cologne Cathedral. lt is the largest church in Germany and the landmark of the city of Cologne. The Gothic cathedral was started in 1248 and was not completed until 1880. Its two 157-meter-high towers and the shrine of the Three Kings are particuarly well-known. Since 1996, Cologne Cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most visited sights in Germany.

Use the opportunity to climb up the South Tower! (not included in the group entry ticket)

Timetable

8:00 AM — Meeting Point

We meet in the main hall of Koblenz Central Station and travel together to Cologne by regional train.Please be on time! Don't forget your student ID and the Deutschalndticket! The train will not wait for us, and unfortunately, we cannot wait for late arrivals.

11:00 AM–approx. 12:00 PM — Deutschlandfunk

Guided tour of the Deutschlandfunk broadcasting centre in Cologne. 

12:00–1:00 PM — Lunch at Deutschlandfunk

Optional lunch together at the Deutschlandfunk cafeteria. Please plan for approx. €10 for lunch.

After lunch — Into the City

We will travel together by bus to Cologne city centre.

2:30 PM — Cologne Cathedral

Visit of Cologne Cathedral. 

Voluntary (extra ticket necessary): Climb up the South Tower. At 157 metres, the cathedral is one of Cologne’s most iconic landmarks. The viewing platform is around 100 metres above ground, reached via 533 steps — offering spectacular views over the city and the Rhine.

From 3:30 PM — Free Time

The rest of the afternoon is yours! Explore Cologne, wander through the Old Town, relax by the Rhine, visit a café or bar, or discover the city on your own.

Further information

Registration Participation is by registration via the International Office od the Hochschule Koblenz only. Places are limited. Important: Please arrive at 8:00 AM sharp. We cannot wait for late arrivals.

Costs Please budget for:

  • approx. €10 for the optional lunch at Deutschlandfunk
  • any personal expenses during the afternoon
